Thierry GFELLER

Piano

A pianist and arranger as well, I have delved into numerous musical genres. Born in Geneva, I completed my musical studies successively at the Alfred Cortot Paris Superior Music School where I graduated with a Piano Teaching Degree (Diplôme d’Enseignement), then at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milano and the Geneva High School for Music where I completed Music Theory studies.

Attending those renowned european music schools enabled me to work with such great pianist as Bernard Ringeissen, Jean Micault, Krassimir Stoychev, Ernesto Esposito, Sergio Marengoni and composer as Gianni Possio, Nicolas Bolens, Jean-Pierre Studer. This exposed me to different cultural and personal approaches to music teaching.

Since then, I have given piano recitals and I have appeared as an accompanist, performing excerpts of operatic works with opera singers (Carmen, Werther). I have also made numerous piano arrangements of “light” music and film music scores, as well as popular songs. Some are on my Youtube Channel (“Thierry Gfeller”). I also play a little bit of Jazz as I have been participating to an atelier AMR with Andrès Jimenez since September 2021.

In parallel with my performing and arranging activities, my artistic vocation led me to teach music very early. This is why I have devoted myself to all my pupils for many years with passion. Since 2010 I have been teaching in the Geneva region for several schools like la Julienne Plan les Ouates, Maison de la Musique de Divonne, Ecole de musique de Gex, International School of Geneva, Conservatoire d’Annemasse, CMG.

My pedagogical project consists in training good amateur pianists, to allow them to read and perform pieces of the classical repertoire, and to help them become fair interpreters of other musical aesthetics. My teaching method encompasses aural training, sight-reading, the knowledge of basic chords and some rules regarding figure harmony at the keyboard. Thus my aim is to provide my pupils with the tools they need to achieve satisfactory improvement by themselves. Speaking about my pedagogical skills, I am the holder of a Master’s degree in Education Sciences from the University of Geneva and I am the author of a Thesis on my piano teaching experience.
